A New Perspective on Addiction
Redefining how addiction is perceived to help improve general understanding of the disease
The Addiction Complex
A person with the disease of Addiction has an unusually strong Addiction Complex. An Addiction Complex is a large bundle of certain genes, traits, and experiences which all are interconnected and form the addiction complex. Each Addiction Complex is different and everyone has one.
The Rebound Effect
The Rebound Effect is when a drug decreases your baseline functioning in some area, making you feel worse in that area when sober—tricking you into thinking the drug is improving such area when in reality it is not.
Problems of Identity in Those Who Have Addiction
Integration of the addict identity into ones greater sense of self is crucial when it comes to entering and maintaining recovery. In this post I explore why this is so important and how stigmatization and misunderstanding of addiction make this difficult.
Addiction From the Mind of an Addict
Addiction is much more complex then it appears to be on the surface. The mind of an addict may often feel completely divided and in constant conflict with itself.
My Story
My name is Alex and I am an addict, an alcoholic, and I most definitely have the disease of addiction. For much of my life things felt completely and utterly hopeless. Try after try, rehab after rehab, therapist after therapist and I still felt empty as though the only thing which could fill my void was substances. The moment I stopped using my mind filled with immense chaos, and the moment I had one to ease that chaos I’d be off to the races again and soon in a blackout. I felt miserable, constantly bringing chaos and terror to the lives of the people I loved most. Many times I just wanted it all to end because I felt as long as I existed I would use, and as long as I used I would continue to drag everyone around me into chaos and misery. I’m sharing this because today I don’t feel that way. Today I have found my purpose, and am working to spread love in this universe. Today I know that I can flow down a beautiful path, I am 100% sure of it. Even when I face hardship (which happens often) whether it be from depression, anxiety, addiction, OCD, or life in general I know that everything will be okay. Today I still struggle, often. I still lapse on substances, I still experience mental episodes, and life still gets the best of me at times. But the difference is, today, no matter what happens in my life today I am 100% certain that I can grow from my struggles, and if I practice a few key principles in my life everything will not just be okay, but it will be beautiful.
