Food Donations: Businesses and Individuals
If you are interested in donating food, please contact us using the form on this page. If you are a restaurant and have wanted to donate food, but either can’t find anyone to pick it up for you, or, they can’t pick it up in a window that works for you and your business, we can help. We make our pick ups based on your schedule. Need a pickup after you are ready to close up at 11:30pm on a Tuesday? We can help.
Individuals that want to help out and donate food can also use the same form on this page. We will set up best times for either a pickup of the food you want to donate, or you can meet us at one of food tables in Chauncey.
Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (1996)
- Purpose: To encourage the donation of surplus food by protecting donors from liability.
- Who is protected: It applies to qualified donors like retail stores, wholesalers, restaurants, and agricultural producers who donate “apparently wholesome food” to non-profits.
- What is protected: The act covers food that meets federal, state, and local labeling and quality standards, even if it is unmarketable due to factors like appearance or age.
Additional Protections in the State of Ohio to Encourage Food Donations
- Food Donation Improvement Act: This 2022 federal law expanded liability protection for donors, including those who make direct donations.
- Ohio Revised Code § 2305.37: This statute provides immunity for donating perishable food.
Athens Ohio Food Rescue
We are always looking to expand our outreach in our food rescue operations in Athens Ohio. If you are a restaurant or know any restaurant owners who want to help those in need in the Athens, The Plains and Chauncey areas, please contact us.
Our food pickups / food rescues in Athens Ohio are done on the donors schedule. If you don’t wrap up until midnight on a weeknight, no problem. We can send out our volunteers to meet you and pick up your food donation. All food rescued will be sent straight to our shared commercial kitchen facility at Acenet Athens Ohio.
